How Much Does an EV Charger Cost to Install in Winchester?

Electric vehicle ownership across Winchester and Hampshire is growing rapidly. If you've recently bought an EV — or you're considering one — a dedicated home charger is one of the best investments you can make. But how much does it actually cost to have one installed? As a Winchester electrician who installs EV chargers every week, here's an honest breakdown of the costs involved in 2026.
How Much Does a Home EV Charger Cost in Total?
For most Winchester homes, a complete EV charger installation — including the charger unit, all materials, and labour — costs between £850 and £1,500. The typical installation we carry out falls around the £1,000–£1,200 mark.
Here's how that breaks down:
- Charger unit: £400–£700 depending on brand and features - Installation labour: £250–£500 depending on complexity - Materials (cable, fixings, protection): £100–£200 - Consumer unit upgrade (if needed): £150–£350 additional
These are real prices based on the work we do across Winchester, Kings Worthy, New Alresford, Stockbridge, and the surrounding Hampshire villages — not national averages from comparison websites.
What Affects the Installation Cost?
The single biggest factor is the distance between your consumer unit (fuse board) and where the charger will be mounted. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the consumer unit is straightforward. A charger at the far end of a long driveway requires significantly more cable, groundwork, and time.
Other factors that affect the price include:
Consumer Unit Capacity
An EV charger draws a significant load — a 7.4kW charger pulls around 32 amps. If your existing consumer unit doesn't have a spare way, or if it's an older unit without adequate RCD protection, you may need a consumer unit upgrade as part of the installation. This adds £150–£350 to the total cost but is essential for safety and compliance.
Earthing System
Some properties — particularly older homes in Winchester's rural villages — have TT earthing systems that require an earth rod to be installed as part of the EV charger circuit. This is a regulatory requirement under BS 7671 and adds around £80–£150 to the installation.
Cable Route Complexity
If the cable needs to run through walls, across ceilings, or underground in ducting, the installation takes longer and costs more. We always plan the neatest, most discreet route possible — nobody wants cables trailing across the front of their house.
Tethered vs Untethered Charger
A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached (like a petrol pump). An untethered charger has a socket where you plug in your own cable. Tethered units are more convenient but slightly more expensive. Most of our Winchester customers choose tethered.
Which EV Chargers Do We Recommend?
We install all major brands, but the chargers we fit most often in 2026 are:
- Ohme Home Pro (from ~£450) — Excellent smart tariff integration. If you're on Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus, this charger automatically charges when electricity is cheapest. It's our most popular recommendation for cost-conscious customers. - Myenergi Zappi (from ~£600) — The best choice if you have solar panels. It can divert excess solar generation to your car, effectively charging for free during sunny periods. - Easee One (from ~£550) — A sleek, compact unit with excellent build quality. Good all-rounder with strong app features and load balancing. - Tesla Wall Connector (from ~£450) — Purpose-built for Tesla vehicles with seamless integration. Also works with other EVs via a Type 2 connector.
We're happy to advise on the best charger for your specific vehicle, electricity tariff, and property.
The OZEV Grant — What's Changed in 2026?
The government's OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant has been updated from 1 April 2026. Here's what you need to know:
- Renters and flat owners: The grant has increased from £350 to £500 per socket — a significant improvement. If you rent your home or live in a flat, this can reduce a typical installation cost to as little as £500–£1,000. - Standard homeowners (detached/semi-detached): Unfortunately, the grant is not available for owner-occupiers of houses. This has been the case since 2022. - Landlords: The residential landlord chargepoint grant continues, also increased to £500 per socket.
The grants have been extended until 31 March 2027, and a new application process through the government's Find a Grant service replaces the old portal.
If you're eligible, we handle the grant paperwork as part of the installation — you don't need to apply separately.
How Long Does Installation Take?
A standard EV charger installation typically takes 3–4 hours. More complex installations — those requiring longer cable runs, groundwork, or a consumer unit upgrade — may take a full day. We always aim to complete the work in a single visit.
What's Included in Our Installation?
Every EV charger installation from Orsidaen Electrical Services includes:
- Supply and installation of your chosen charger unit - New dedicated circuit from the consumer unit - All cable, fixings, and protective devices - Earth rod installation (if required) - Full testing to BS 7671 standards - Electrical Installation Certificate - Registration with your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) if required - Help setting up the charger's smartphone app
Can I Just Use a 3-Pin Plug?
Technically, most EVs come with a granny cable that plugs into a standard 13-amp socket. However, we strongly advise against relying on this for regular charging. A standard socket isn't designed for the sustained high load of EV charging (often 8+ hours overnight). This can cause overheating, and in older properties with aging wiring, it's a genuine fire risk.
A dedicated EV charger on its own circuit is safer, faster (a 7kW charger is roughly 3 times quicker than a 3-pin plug), and better for your vehicle's battery health.
